What Heavy Equipment Would You Prefer To Operate?

There is a wide range of heavy equipment in use around the country these days. You can operate equipment that digs holes, pushes dirt, or delivers a perfect finish. Heavy equipment is also used in demolition work, mining, farming and most commonly, construction. You will also find heavy equipment used in forestry, at ports, and in general industry. So what is your preferred unit of machinery? At ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Training School you can gain training on:

  • Backhoes,
  • Wheel Loaders,
  • Scrapers,
  • Excavators,
  • Bulldozers,
  • Road Graders,
  • Rock Trucks,
  • Skid Steers, and
  • All-Terrain Forklifts

One suggestion we do make is to learn to operate as many types of heavy equipment as possible. If you get the chance, also learn to drive trucks, particularly those used to transport heavy equipment. That doesn’t mean you cannot specialize in one type of heavy equipment – you can, however, the more varied your skills the more attractive you are to employers.

Learning more than one type of heavy equipment isn’t as difficult as it sounds. Each type of heavy equipment uses a similar set of controls, some more than others, and some that require more technical skills – for example, setting a grader’s blades to precise angles and heights. There are some types of heavy equipment that demand multi-skills – the backhoe is a good example; it requires the skills of an excavator operator and the skills of a loader operator.

Being multi-skilled has a number of benefits. If you become a little bored operating one type of equipment, you can move sidewise to another type. Employers obviously find multi-skilled employees more attractive. They can be set to work on any project and not left sitting around waiting. What’s your favourite type of heavy equipment? Now pick a few more to broaden your talents.

ATS and Bulldozer Operation

Bulldozers are widely known in the heavy equipment industry and by people in general. They are huge machines that can move an amazing amount of material in no time at all. It is important that they are operated safely and correctly as to avoid injury or worse.

Anyone that desires to operate a bulldozer MUST be qualified and fully trained. Associated Training Services offers a training program for operation. In these courses, students learn the importance of safe operation and how to do it.

Bulldozers, just like any vehicle, have seatbelts that must be worn. Putting the belt on before starting the engine is smart. That way the operator is completely seated when starting up the machine. Operation training will prepare students for minor maintenance of heavy equipment which is very important as an operator.

Another thing to remember about bulldozers is that they are HUGE! When being operated, it is important to keep them away from hanging power lines. There must be precautions taken when driving them on the roads at all. Traffic should be stopped and nowhere near the machine. It is vital that all warning signs on the machine are working such as the horn, back up signal and more.

Bulldozers are amazing machines that can do unimaginable work. If you are interested in operation of heavy equipment, Associated Training Services is the answer for your future. You can enroll today and get started on your training in no time. Contact ATS for more information and get your future started!

I researched training schools and ATS looked the best online. I contacted the school and got more information. Before I knew it, I was on campus and training to work in heavy equipment. I am almost done with the course and very satisfied with what I have learned. I have begun looking at open jobs and there are alot. I am hoping to find a good position locally and when I do, I have ATS to thank for my success.’

Are You Frustrated By Those ‘With CDL’ Job Ads?

Looking for heavy equipment operator with CDL. Looking for excavator operator with CDL. Looking for bulldozer operator with CDL. Do these types of heavy equipment job ads frustrate you? There are thousands of heavy equipment operators who have a wide range of experiences to bring to employers, yet they lack that one important qualification – a CDL.

Employers are becoming more cost conscious these days and one of the biggest costs associated with any business is that of labor. If a business can employ workers who are multi-skilled, they can get by with fewer employee numbers, and that means lower costs. Lower costs also open the door for more tenders, and that means job security for those who are employed.

If you are a heavy equipment operator with several years experience, then you will find that you are in high demand – if you have a commercial drivers license. Employers can send you out on a job – you take your equipment out to the job site, do the job, then return, or move onto the next job site. For the employer, that’s one person doing the job of two.

Adding a CDL is a cost effective way to improve your job opportunities. It also adds a little variety to your working life. You can learn to drive a heavy equipment transport truck in as little as three weeks. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to pass your commercial drivers license tests, and to be issued with a CDL. This is effectively a license for life, the only ongoing requirement is to follow the road rules (and not have your license suspended), and to remain reasonably healthy – you will need to undergo regular health check.

Instead of becoming frustrated by those job ads, add a CDL to your skills set – you’ll no longer find those job ads frustrating.

Finding A Heavy Equipment Training School That Really Cares

What sets some heavy equipment training schools apart from others? In a nutshell, some care about the future of their graduates while others only care about the future of their bank balances. To be blunt, training schools have to make a profit in order to survive – but that’s business. Along the way, you can be profit focused, or customer focused, and history tells us that the most successful businesses are those that focus on the customer – and that’s the student when it comes to training.

Associated Training Schools have been training truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, and crane operators for almost fifty years. One of the reasons we have been successful is the focus we place on the students’ future. We aim to make training as accessible as possible. In that regard, we offer assistance with financing your training and assistance with accommodation while undertaking your training. Our training is designed to be as complete as possible including both classroom-based tuition, and hands-on in-the-seat training – you get to do the operating, not watching someone else do it.

While our focus is on training you to a standard that makes you employable, we are also working with you to help you find that first job. It is not unusual for students to have their first job already arranged, before they have even graduated – they leave our training school and walk straight into their first job. Our career services section has thousands of employers they can refer graduates to, and online job site where employers post job vacancies (you can also check this blog on Saturday’s for some of the latest opportunities).

By focusing your successful long term future, we are also achieving our long term aims. Those aims include staying in business and employing some of the best training staff available – but then, that is also helping you achieve your dreams. If you are looking for heavy equipment training, crane operator training, or truck driver training, then make sure your training company is interested in your long term future, and not just the size of your wallet.

ATS Offers A Wide Range Of Heavy Equipment Training

ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Schools have 10 training locations spread around the nation. Each training school offers heavy equipment training in a variety of equipment. Each training school is different and the range of equipment available at each one may vary.

Heavy equipment covers a very broad range of equipment. Small skid steer loaders are considered heavy equipment and the range goes up to include some of the super machinery used in mining. It is impossible to offer training in every type of machinery, however, by providing a cross section of equipment in training, students gain skills in the most common types in use. This equipment may include:

  • Backhoes
  • Wheel loaders
  • Scrapers
  • Excavators
  • Bulldozers
  • Road graders
  • Rock trucks
  • Skid Steers and
  • All-Terrain Forklifts

Many of the skills are interchangeable to a certain extent. What most people don’t realize is that heavy equipment operation involves many different skills. For example, hand-eye coordination is important in most jobs. However, for some heavy equipment your hands may be going in different directions. A good example is an excavator where one hand is perhaps pushing the boom out, the other hand is opening the bucket to release the contents while the feet are controlling the swing of the entire unit. This coordination is a skill that is transferable to other machinery, even if the controls are unfamiliar at first.

If you are looking at a career in heavy equipment then ATS could be a smart choice when it comes to heavy equipment training. The wide range of equipment means you will gain a good grounding of skills. Add to this the in-class training in areas such as safety, soils and site layouts and you have the complete training package.
