What Are The Entry Requirements To Become A Heavy Equipment Operator?
Heavy equipment operators are responsible for machinery often valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. For that reason, and for the general safety of everyone including property, operators need to be trained before commencing work.
Generally speaking, there are no education requirements to becoming a heavy equipment operator. You do need to be at least 18 years old and be able to pass a Department of Transport physical examination. This means there is no upper age limit nor is there a gender bias at all. In simple terms, if you are over 18, fit enough and can pass the written and practical assessments then you can be a heavy equipment operator.
When it comes to wages, entry level operators can expect around $16 per hour rising to as much as $34 per hour depending on the type of equipment and the experience of the operator. Generally speaking, experienced operators can earn around $25 per hour.
Once you have completed your training, we may be able to assist you to find your first job. We have a success rate of around 80% with employment still strong. The opportunities for new heavy equipment operators is expected to increase over the next 6-12 months as many of the economic stimulus project commence.
